SNOWMOBILE TRAILS -- MARKED AND GROOMED (See Map Below)
BACKCOUNTRY TRAILS UPDATE -- 3/23/08 DJ'S closed for the season.
Snowmobile Trails are subject to weather, snowpack, and funding. Trails are marked and groomed at Outfitter Guide expense. Some "lettered routes" are in part funded by the California Off Highway Vehicle Program and are groomed by the US Forest Service with state funds. All snowmobile trails are patrolled on snowmobile by the Mono County Sheriff's Department for your safety. Average snowpack 3-5 feet. Elevation 7600 ft to 9104 ft.
ABOUT DJ'S trails...... - See Map Below ....4 groomed and marked trails (roads) connect to your departure point at Smokey Bear Flat. Checkpoints (markers) are located at the junctions. Most trails are marked "line of sight".
- Smokey Bear Flat Photo --Departure Point for all rides. 7600 ft. Fun for all levels. 500-acre pumice flat..."the largest snowplay area nearest Mammoth". 1 to 4-hour rides.
The nightly "po-go-nip" fog settles each evening, turning the snow into a glacial long lasting snowpack! This area offers great powder riding for backcountry riders who return from their backcountry trip a few minutes early.
Smokey Bear Flat offers families a safe and fun place to take turns with the kids thus saving money on the rentals (called the Introduction to Snowmobiling Family Ride). Gentle hills at the south end of the pumice flat offers all ages thrills and chills.
- Vista Loop(Blue Trail) Photo -- Elevation 8615 ft. Beginner route. Eleven miles round trip. 1-hour ride.
The Vista Loop is a great introduction to snowmobiling ride. Vista Trail is the most popular trail in Mammoth with over 25,000 visitors.
The entire trail system offers spectacular views of the Ansel Adams Wilderness. The area to the south is known as the "Long Valley Caldera."
- Lookout Mtn Loop(Green Trail)-- Photo Elevation 8352 ft. (top) "L" orange diamond lettered route. Beginner to Intermediate. Twelve miles round trip completely encircles the mountain at an elevation of 7800 ft. 2 hour ride.
The NORTHWEST view is the San Joaquin Ridge and peaks south of Yosemite. The NORTHEAST view is Bald Mtn (looks like a white gumdrop elevation 9,104). At the base of Bald Mtn is the hatchery for the famous and trophy size "Alpers Trout". Also at the base of Bald Mtn is the Owens River which feeds Los Angeles a part of its water via the Los Angeles Aqueduct built in the 1940's.
The view EAST is the Glass Mountain Range 11,126 feet high. The view SOUTHEAST is of the White Mtn Range 14,246 Ft high.
The view to the SOUTHWEST is of Mammoth Mountain and the San Joaquin Ridge. Waters on the east side of the San Joaquin Ridge go to Los Angeles and on the west side of the ridge to San Francisco.
- Bald Mtn. (Orange Trail)--Elevation 9104 ft."A" and "D" orange diamond lettered route. Twenty-four miles round trip. Beginner to Advanced. 3-4 hour ride area. The longest, and highest, snowmobile trail in Mammoth goes to the top of the mountain. Photo
Panoramic views! The log cabin warming hut was procured for public use by DJ'S Snowmobile Adventures in 1986. Photo Breathtaking views of the Mono Lake Nat'l Forest Scenic Area. Mono Lake is 900 thousand years old.
- Sawmill Trail - Tunnel Access(Yellow Trail)--Elevation 8800 ft. "A","B" and "K" orange diamond route. Eleven miles round trip. This trail system is known for its deep snowpack. It is the main route to/from the Town of Mammoth. 1-hour ride.
The area has somewhat limited views from the trail system. A guided ride can take you to the Mammoth Overlook with an overwhelming closeup of Mammoth Mountain and a spectacular view of the Long Valley Caldera.
Access to the Sawmill Trail from Smokey Bear Flat is through the snowmobile tunnel UNDER US Hwy 395. Because of the densely forrested area West of Hwy 395, we offer GUIDED RIDES ONLY. Beginner to Intermediate.
